Blu-ray Review: GRIMM Season One
From the producer’s of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comes GRIMM , NBC’s newest genre hit that aired this past season and now it’s hitting store shelves on Tuesday, August 7th and this Ultraviolet Blu-ray is simply awesome!
Ok, I was instantly a fan of GRIMM when it began airing on NBC last year. The show follows homicide detective Nick Berkhardt (David Giuntoli) who discovers he’s a GRIMM, a protector who is in charge of keeping the balance between humanity and the fairy tale monsters we grew up reading about. In the beginning Nick is very green and clueless at this new side gig he’s acquired but as the season progresses he learns some new tricks and slowly progresses into what he was ultimately meant to be, but he’s still learning which leaves room for plenty of storytelling. Nick has a gift that allows him to sniff out and see the monsters that walk amongst us in everyday society, some are good and some are really bad and some look really weird!
Nick isn’t alone in his new battle with these creatures. His partner Hank (Russell Hornsby) is always on the case even though he’s out of the loop as far as the creatures and Nick’s powers go. Nick also has a new friend/ally in Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) who is this sort of werewolf type creature who has changed his ways and is now a vegan and lives the simple, laid back kind of life and he’s the show’s comic relief and a welcomed one at that. The chemistry between Giuntoli and Mitchell is great, watching these two team up to solve some of these mysteries is cool! Rounding out the amazing cast are Bitsie Tulloch, Reggie Lee and Sasha Roiz who plays Captain Sean Renard, Nick’s boss and a corrupt one who has his own secrets that Nick’s unaware of. This show also sees some great guest stars like Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Amy Acker, Titus Welliver, Sebastian Roché and Claire Coffee who I’m really hoping we see more of in season two! All of the characters on the show are great along with the acting, the locations, the scenery and camera work.
Each entry from this 5-disc 22-episode first season has a great story to tell with always unique monsters. How they blend in a modern day crime/cop drama with fairy tales are pretty brilliant. I mean we see Red Riding Hood jogging in the park in the very first episode plus she’s jogging to the 80’s tune Sweet Dreams. The series sees golden eggs and what actually lays them, what I called the “Frog Prince, the mythical cat people and lots more cool creatures called Wesen’s! The only downside to the creatures is the CGI morphing work on the heads sometimes looks rushed but I give it a pass because it’s not that bad, hey it’s TV, not a $200 million dollar blockbuster. The end result is the practical makeup and masks which are pretty freaking awesome!
Getting to the Blu-ray and the packaging: We have 5-discs that include all 22-episode from the first season plus each disc has some extras that include deleted scenes. There’s lots more extras which you’ll see at the bottom. The slip sleeve packaging is also really nice and well put together. It unfolds to reveal the GRIMM Interactive Guide/ Wesen Dictionary that is packed full of useful information an some images, it includes the names and descriptions of the creatures we see in GRIMM. Hey, they even throw in some trading cards for the heck of it for all you card collectors out there!
Bottom line is, this Grimm: Season One (Blu-ray + UltraViolet) comes highly recommended! This is simply a cool series, well written and this 5-disc set is chopped full of awesome extras! They really went all out for the fans!
